Leave with a yes, a smaller car, or a documented wait
The week should end in one of three places. Yes: the packet is complete, the pull rule is written, and the full transportation cost fits. Smaller car: the credit file might pass, but the payment does not. Wait: a wrong repo balance or a paid collection still needs a page, and the current vehicle can hold. Any of those three is a decision. A fourth visit without a new page is not.
If you sign, keep the buyer’s order, the truth-in-lending page, the insurance binder, and the payoff confirmation for the old loan in one sleeve. If you do not sign, keep the pull list so the next shop starts from knowledge. Either sleeve is the auto file. It is more useful than a memory of the desk’s optimism.
Add-on products change the payment you must carry. GAP, extended service contracts, paint protection, and similar items should be listed with their monthly effect before you say yes. If the payment only fits without them, decline them. A later hardship is not the time to discover that half the payment was optional. Ask the desk to reprint the numbers without the add-ons.
Do not leave the lot without copies of what you signed. The buyer’s order, the financing page, and any arbitration or add-on page should be in your hands before you drive away. If the desk says the copies will be mailed, wait. A copy you do not hold is a copy you cannot use when a later funding call asks you to return.
A credit union you already belong to can often look at the same packet with fewer surprises. Call them before the dealer weekend. Ask what they need and whether they will use a pull you already have. If they can work from the packet, the dealer is a comparison, not the only door. Bring the credit-union worksheet to the dealer so the room has a second number.
Down-payment cash should match the bank page. A cash advance from a card the same week can look like borrowed earnest money and can add a new payment you did not budget. If a relative is helping, use a gift letter and a transfer that shows on both accounts. Do not hand the dealer an envelope of cash that has no trail.
Title brands, salvage history, and odometer pages are not credit-repair items, and they still belong in the same week’s judgment. A cheap payment on a damaged title can become an expensive repair year. Pull the vehicle history while you pull your own credit history. The household can only absorb so many surprises.
If a desk calls days later to say funding failed and you must return, stop and read the copies you already hold. Bring those copies to a counselor or an attorney if the story does not match the pages. This guide cannot decide that dispute. It can tell you why the copies in the sleeve matter more than the memory of the Saturday handshake.
Service records for the current vehicle help you decide whether a wait is safe. If the brakes and tires are done and the commute is short, you may have the week you need for a bureau reply. If the transmission is already slipping, waiting is a different risk. Write that mechanical fact on the same card as the pull rule so the household argues from both facts, not from hope.
Shop insurance on the exact VIN before you fall in love with a payment. Florida rates can move a lot by zip code, vehicle, and household driving list. A payment that fit at the desk can fail at the insurer. Put both numbers on the folder. If they do not fit together, the car does not fit.
Temp-tag expiration and the first insurance payment often land in the same week as the first car draft. Write all three on one card and put the card on the dash until the first draft succeeds. If any of the three is missing a confirmation, that confirmation is this week’s task. A car loan with bad credit can still be a stable loan when those three pages exist. It becomes an unstable loan when the tag, the insurance, and the draft are treated as three separate surprises.
Negative equity from the current car is a number the payoff quote and the independent offer should show together. If the payoff is higher than the independent offer, the difference will ride into the new loan unless you bring cash. Ask the desk to show that difference in writing before they talk about a “small extra.” Extra that is rolled in is still extra you will pay with interest. If you cannot bring the cash, a smaller vehicle or a wait may be the path. Write which path you chose on the folder so a weekend special cannot reopen the math.
A dealer that wants a voided check “to set up autopay” before you have the signed contract is early. Autopay setup belongs after you have the payment date in writing. If they already have a voided check and the deal dies, ask in writing that they destroy the image and confirm they will not draft. File that confirmation with the unsigned buyer’s order. The next step is to watch the checking account for a draft that should not exist.
